Tesla CEO Elon Musk reiterates a single FSD stack update for V12.5.x
Elon Musk acknowledged the existing issue and hinted at forthcoming improvements to Full Self-Driving (FSD) highway performance. He stated, “12.5.x will finally combine the city and highway software stacks.” This update promises to integrate both city and highway driving functionalities, potentially enhancing the overall performance and user experience.
Elon Musk has previously floated the concept of a single, unified FSD stack for both inner-city and highway driving. Back in May, he projected that FSD V12.5 would be ready for release by late June, promising that the update would bring significant enhancements.
Interestingly, Musk also confirmed at that time that the Tesla Cybertruck, which has not yet received Autopilot or FSD, will gain Full Self-Driving capabilities with the V12.5 update of the advanced driver-assist system. Although Musk did not reiterate this estimate in his recent post on X, such an update would undoubtedly be welcomed by Cybertruck owners.
Industry analysts have pointed out that earlier iterations of FSD utilized a dual-stack system, leveraging Tesla’s legacy Autopilot stack for highway driving and FSD for city streets. While FSD V11 merged these stacks, Tesla later implemented distinct software decision-making processes for highway versus city driving scenarios. With V12.5 reverting to a unified single-stack approach, FSD is anticipated to deliver enhanced operational efficiency compared to previous versions.
